Dear Twitter

This is incorrect. “Their” implies a plural subject and “this person” is most definitely singular.

Please remedy the situation as soon as possible.

I have mixed feelings about this use of the word “their”. I think as gender sensitivity and hence gender neutral language has become a trend, our usage of words is evolving. I know that technically it’s plural, but it has a much nicer sound than his/her and less pretentious then hir. What do you think is an ideal way for twitter to address the singular pronoun issue along with the gender issue in this case?

  2. I don’t know if there’s an ideal. I just remember having this drilled into my head and therefore everyone else must suffer as well.

Whether grammar trumps political correctness, I really can’t say!
